His death hit me pretty hard. I've known "Five Years", "Lady Stardust", and "Life on Mars" for as long as I can remember. Listening to "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" all the way through for the first time as a young adolescent changed everything about the way I related to music and art. For a long time afterwards, my main musical input consisted of slowly working my way through his 70's albums. Bowie also had a huge influence on my visual art. I'm almost unable to draw without listening to the "right" music. Bowie took it a step further by guiding me though visual worlds I would never have discovered on my own. For a long time, I thought that my art consisted of nothing more than a translation of the music I liked into visual forms. The majority of the time this meant turning my new favorite Bowie album into pages of frenzied sketches and concepts, just trying to figure it all out.
Rest in Peace, Bowie. Your family lost a loving man. The world lost a incredible artist.
Love,
-Joseph
