Thrift Store Find # 2

Hey guys, I recently went and got myself a brand new Tumblr. You can catch more frequent posts over here: http://josephsmolin.tumblr.com/.

In other news, I found a real gem at the thrift store recently, and went all photography on it:

Turn on the bright lights!

Apparently this small, rather ugly object served as an in-store display for a signature perfume entitled "Emma Rose", which was itself only a small part of the large-scale marketing campaign for the movie Spiderman 2. We live in strange times.

Spotlight #2 (fading)

Fame # 2

All pictures seen here were taken in a bathroom with the lights off, while my brother Nathan held a flashlight. It just seemed to add a little more drama to the photos.

Spotlight #1

$ 0.99

This is my favorite photo in the series. Something really cool about the eye.

Lust

I like this photo a good bit too. I hope that other people find these photos (and the object itself) as brutally thought-provoking as I seem to. Shout-out to Nathan for holding the flashlight so I could snap these.

New Sketch

Hey guys, here's a new page out of my sketchbook for you. You know me, just trying to keep creativity/ideas flowing while actual life speeds by.

"Your attempts to side with our enemy will only hurt you."

I don't want to demystify the process too much, but I will say that the creative session that produced this image mostly consisted of watching live Of Montreal videos playing with the sound off, while actually listening to The National. I should have at least one more image in a similar (but hopefully less cluttered) vein coming soon, as well as hopefully a good bit of other stuff cause I'm on break!

New Ink Sketch

Quick little ink sketch. It's called "Self-Portrait at 2 am."

Self-Portrait at 2 am

I've been pretty overwhelmed with school + life lately. This is kind of the emotional result of that I guess.

New Ink Piece

Hey guys! Just a quick little update. Did a nice little ink piece the other day.

Love

It's the second piece with a caption I've done recently (see the last post for the other one). I like the kind of warped comic feel it gives the whole thing. I don't think either one would be as powerful without the text. Although I'm sure this is a pretty niche art style to work in. But whatever, I think it communicates something that I feel the need to communicate very well. Will post again soon.

Quick Sketches!

Hey guys! Just got a few quick sketches for you today. Unfortunately, the free time that I have to work on personal sketches has been greatly reduced. Most of my "free" sketch time recently has been doodling in class or else trying to calm down when I'm stressed out. As a result, most of my creative sketching has been pretty hectic and anxious in tone as of late.

Happy Birthday! (sketch)

I really like this one. Needs a lot of cleaning up and some color to really come to life, but I really like something about it. Very like "dark surrealism" in tone. I was really stressed out in class when I drew this one.

Sketching

Just a quick little sketch. Something nice about it. Nose is pretty off though.

Thinking (Life lived in Outer Space) Sketch

I did this one when I was in a pretty weird mood. Very rough, obviously, but I think it could really be something if I spent some more time working on it. I guess it's kind of about thinking. It's weird how you can think about something/someone all the time and it won't necessarily change or fix anything at all. What does it mean for someone to think about someone else? Thinking is really our primary way of interacting with the world around us, but it's also completely hidden to anyone except for us, or rather, for the individual doing it. Sorry to get all fake philosophical on you guys, but this drawing definitely came out of thoughts like that.

Alright, I'll try to update soon. I have a ton of drawings like these that I need to sort through to see if any of them are good.

Pics from Photography Class + Update!

Hey guys! So I know it's been a while. School is hard, life is crazy, and I've been really, really busy. But I still have a lot of stuff that I'm excited to get out there and, at this point in my life, being creative isn't something I can just stop doing. Whether it's doodling in class, or jotting down a quick thought or idea in my sketchbook, I hang on to my need for art and creativity every day. I still have a nearly finished children's book to finish up over Christmas and then try my hardest to get out there. It may seem like things are going slow, but that doesn't mean that nothing is happening.

Today I wanted to share some of my favorite shots to come out of a digital photography class I'm currently in. Most of this these shots were taken as jpegs and could not be edited later, not my idea, just the constraints of the assignments.

Hanging

On a street close to my house...

Sunset

Lightsaber Shapes

Long exposure of my friend Corban swinging a toy light saber around a forest. Yeah, we're pretty cool.

Burning your Flowers...

This isn't my favorite shot ever, and the background needs some work, but it was super fun to take.

Studio Photography: Acoustic Guitar

Taken in the photo studio of Wallace hall. Half of the lights didn't work...

Stranger Photography: Andrea

This is, first off, edited and not a final turn in for the class, but also a photo that makes me really happy. For this particular project we had to go up to strangers and ask them if we could take photos of them. It was kind of awkward. I had a few people tell me no, including one man who demanded that I give him my camera so that he could "take pictures of me and see how I like it." The biggest problem was, however, that most people who said yes would paste on a fake smile and then proceed to stare blankly at the camera until I was done. Fortunately, Andrea (the girl pictured) yielded much better results by spending most of our encounter talking nervously about how stressful her new research job was. Way to be open and interesting, Andrea. I hope you've gotten the hang of that new job!

Thanks for your time and will try to post again soon,

ATM Research Project

Hey guys! While I was at the Carlow institute of technology me and my fellow Industrial Design students did a cool service-design related research project. We split into small groups of 4 or 5 people. Our goal was to collect data on the different ways that people handled using a public ATM. We set up shop a ways away from an ATM in a mall and gathered data on everyone who used it. We made 3 final sheets to convey our findings. I was the designated sketcher for my group, and in the observing stage did numerous sketches of the users. Afterwards, I also designed and drew the final sheets from sketches and notes we had taken. It's important to note that I didn't do the marker work here. Also the ATM in the pictures is traced from line-work that another group member did.

ATM RESEARCH #1

ATM RESEARCH #2

So these first two are "Personas" created from observing many different kinds of users and looking at the overlap. We found that men tended to act much more cautiously throughout the transaction, especially when they were alone. We also found that mothers tended to be more comfortable, even though their attention was often split between the ATM and their child.

ATM RESEARCH #3

The third sheet I did is a look at the way various users handled taking out their purses/wallets. It also looks at the way that the cash is collected and put away after the transaction. We found that men tended to get their wallets out earlier and also put the cash into their wallet while walking away. Women tended to do the opposite in those two instances. We also found that mothers sometimes hang their purses on their strollers, or even leave it on the floor for a minute. Generally speaking, women tended to take their time more and go at a slower pace, while men tended to hurry through the process.

Here are some gesture sketches I did while watching various users. Some of these are sequences of use (step by step sketches of the various actions taken by the user). These are just a few choice sketches ones out of many.
ATM SKETCHES #1

ATM SKETCHES #2

I like this sketch a lot. I feel like it conveys a body language well.

ATM notes

Here are some notes that my wonderful group members made!

Here's a photo of me sketching for proof.

MONEY EATERZ

Hey guys! It's been awhile. I've been super swamped getting my kid's book ready for print before I have to get back to school. I reformatted the whole book and am also currently doing some new artwork for it. The book (titled Athena and The Golden Bird) should be available to purchase sometime this fall! I'm super excited about it and am gonna post about it soon. Anyways enjoy this ballpoint concept I did last night:

MONEY EATERZ

It's titled "MONEY EATERZ." This is a concept I've been kicking around for awhile in my head. It actually combines a few different ideas I've had. I think the meaning is pretty evident. Money is often treated as the primary reason for living life. The amount of money that a man has is often considered an objective statement of his worth. Many peoples' day to day lives can be boiled down to key business transactions. We all have to consume money every single day just to survive. Are we to understand ourselves as nothing more than MONEY EATERZ?

Even More Photography (From Ireland):

Hey guys! Got some more photos from my trip to Ireland. I'm editing these completely out of order, so these are are actually from the very beginning of the trip. They're all taken in Ballyvaughan, Ireland, which is in The Burren. Most of the ones today were taken at The Burren College of Art, where we did a project. It's an awesome place. Anyway, enjoy the photographs!

Halo

Here's Bekah working on a project in the studio.

Ballyvaughan Sky

Cool Shot of the sky.

Lost Bicycle

Abandoned bicycle. I like this shot.

Peeling Paint

Hellscape (again)

"Hellscape"

"Empty Head"

Landscape with Paint

So I really really like this photo. It's a somewhat blurry close-up of a painting. I can't take full credit cause I didn't paint the awesome painting, someone at the College did. I really love the intense landscapey feel it takes on here though.

Be back soon!

Short Film!

Hey! I got something pretty crazy for you guys today! It's a stop-motion short film that I made in collaboration with my wonderful brother, Nathan. It's very surreal and emotional, and it's only 20 mins long! This project means a lot to me, so I would definitely recommend checking out when you get a chance.

Pretty interesting, right? I'd love to hear any comments on the film (positive or negative). I'm really proud of the visual style and character design shown throughout the movie. I also really enjoy the last scene. Big thanks to my brother, Nathan. As well as lending a strong creative hand, he oversaw all the animation, edited the entire film with me by his side, and lip-synced all the characters' dialogue. I simply couldn't have made this without him. So thanks. Before I go, here are a few promotional photos that didn't make it into the final film:

Neon Dream Promo #2

The giant newspaper cigarette used to be an element in a mobile I made for an art class in senior year of high school. Glad it's going on to have a solo career entirely its own.

Neon Dreams Promo #1

I love this photo. Good use of groundhog skull.

Thank you so much for reading! This short film has been one of the most fun and rewarding art projects I'm done in a long time, and I hope to see it continue to have a life of its own in the future.

Nervous Energies!

Hey guys. I got a quick ink drawing I did last week. It's about stress:

Nervous Energies!

It's mostly ballpoint, but the larger, more textured lines were done with the side of an ink stick. For those who don't know, ink sticks are super fun to draw with. This is one in a series of pieces with text I've been working on lately. I love how direct text can be, and sometimes the best way to say something is just to write it down. More of these to come soon.

More Photography From Ireland

Hey guys! Got some more photography from Ireland today. Enjoy.

Grimy Hope in the Dark

Good way to kick things off. Cool proportions, very abstract. It's just a grimy light fixture on a ceiling. The camera lens did weird things with the lighting.

Dirty Light Texture

Same light, this time close up. I love the "landscapey" feel it takes on here.

Bike Wheel Creature

Old bike wheel with busted spokes. Almost looks like some Dali-esque alien thing this close up. I love making ordinary things look like weird, imaginary things.

Work

Here are some of my Industrial Design friends working on a furniture project. We turned an old door into a pretty sweet table. If I can find some good pictures, I'll post about it here. It was fun though.

Dead heat/Highway to Nowhere

I really love this photo. Makes me feel some type of way.

Window

Scrap pile outside the studio in the Burren Art School. Photo registers as very sad to me, but I'm not sure why.

Portrait

Awesome portrait of my good friend, Hank. Looking fly.

Thanks guys, be back soon.

Industrial Design: Structural Clock Project

Hey! I got something cool for you guys today. Here's a project from my industrial design studio from last semester. The basic assignment was to design and model a clock (digital or analog) based around a single descriptive adjective. The adjectives were randomly drawn from a box, and you had to exemplify that adjective through the form and characteristics of your final clock. I had the adjective "structural." Here's what I came up with:

Structural Clock

As with most (all) Industrial design projects, the weeks leading up to the final due date were fraught with piles of sketches, conflicting ideas, severe sleep loss, numerous sketch models, and hours and hours of modeling work. To show this reality, here are some (not all) of the models I made leading up to the final design:

Structural Clock Iterations

Structural Clock Iterations

As you can see, the final design didn't come very easily to me. In particular, I messed around with PBC pipes for way too long, before deciding that I didn't want to use them. Early on, I had a really hard time visualizing a "structural" clock, even in sketches. I think I'd have been more comfortable with a more emotive adjective like "Playful" or "Quiet." Design is ,however, about overcoming mental blockages like that so ,at the end of the day, you can still bring something good to the table. I settled on the idea of an "organic" structure that included a lot of subtle curves. Here's my thesis statement on the final design:

"Human beings cannot live without structure. Routines naturally grow out of our day to day experiences. In fact, it is confusing and terrifying to imagine living without some sort of structure. I wanted to incorporate this idea of a naturally occurring structure into my design. I wanted to show that Structure is something organic and natural, something that naturally grows out of human experience. My final clock design grew out of this idea of organic structure. The two legs of the clock stand out as strong supports, giving the clock a physical and somewhat visceral feel. The smooth and subtle curves that compose the main body of the clock invoke a structure forming from natural elements. The inset clock face echoes the shape of the outer body, while adding a new dimension to the overall form. Overall, the clock embodies a strong and inherently organic structure that is entirely it's own."

A bit much, but you get the idea. What's left out is the difficulty involved in actually making the physical model. My final model was made out of a block of yellow foam, that I cut separate clock parts out of, sanded out the details, primed and spray-painted many times until it had the detail I needed, and finally super-glued together. That's not even including fixing mistakes, wet-sending, and spackling. All in all, it was an exhaustive week or so of model work with a clock always ticking in the back-ground. Still I love it. I don't know why I love it, but I do. I guess that's just life sometimes. Anyways, I'm fairly happy with the final design, although, to be honest, I still have some reservations. But that's design work for ya. Here are some more pictures.

Hope you guys enjoyed it! I loved the ideas behind this project, even though I struggled with my adjective a bit. I'm hoping to put up some more Industrial Design projects soon, as well as some more sketches, photos, and concepts.

Love,

-Joseph
